Tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth from its socket in the jawbone when it cannot be saved by filling, crown or root canal treatment, or when its presence creates a clinical problem such as crowding, infection or obstruction. Simple vs surgical extraction
A simple extraction removes a tooth that is fully or sufficiently erupted above the gumline and has roots that are not curved, fused or deeply anchored. Surgical extraction involves making a small incision in the gum, sometimes removing a small amount of surrounding bone and sectioning the tooth into pieces before removal; dissolvable sutures close the site. Both procedures are performed under local anaesthesia, and intravenous sedation is available for anxious patients.

Impacted wisdom teeth that are causing recurrent infection, trapping food around the adjacent molar or causing crowding ahead of orthodontic treatment are also commonly extracted during a combined dental trip, adding minimal additional recovery time. In full-arch implant cases such as all-on-4 or all-on-6, any remaining failing teeth are extracted at the same appointment as the implant placement, so the patient leaves with implants and a temporary fixed bridge on the day of surgery.
Aftercare and recovery
After a simple extraction, a blood clot forms in the socket within the first hour and acts as the biological scaffold for healing. Biting on a gauze pad for 30-45 minutes after the procedure helps the clot form; most patients experience mild to moderate aching for 24-48 hours, which paracetamol and ibuprofen manage well. Rinsing with warm salt water from the second day onwards keeps the socket clean without disturbing the clot. Dry socket — when the clot dislodges before healing is established — affects around 2-5% of extractions and causes a deep aching pain at day 2-4; if this happens, the clinic provides prompt treatment including a medicated socket dressing. When extraction is not the answer
Extraction should always be considered the last resort for a natural tooth, because nothing replaces a natural root as effectively as the tooth itself. Before recommending extraction, Amazing Smile Turkey’s clinicians assess whether root canal treatment, a crown, a filling or periodontal therapy could save the tooth for a reasonable number of further years at a cost comparable to or less than extraction and replacement. A tooth that has been heavily filled but retains sound structure around the roots may still be worth saving with a crown; a tooth with mild to moderate gum disease may respond to periodontal treatment and support an implant or bridge better if left in place.
