Bone Grafting & Sinus Lift in Turkey: When You Need It, Cost & Healing Time (2026 UK Guide)

You send your photos off, get a quote for implants, then a CBCT scan in Antalya comes back with a sentence nobody warned you about: you need a bone graft first. It is one of the most common surprises for UK patients travelling to Turkey, and it is the single biggest reason a quote changes after arrival. This guide explains why it happens, what the four grafting procedures actually are, what they cost, how long they add to your timeline, and the questions to settle before you fly.

Why bone grafting comes up at all

A dental implant is a screw anchored in your jawbone. It needs enough bone, in the right shape, to hold. The problem is that bone is use-it-or-lose-it: once a tooth comes out, the bone that supported it starts to shrink. Most of that loss happens in the first year, and it keeps going quietly for decades.

So if you lost a molar in your thirties and you are now considering implants in your fifties, there is a reasonable chance the ridge has thinned. In the upper back jaw there is a second problem: the maxillary sinus sits directly above those roots, and as bone recedes the sinus floor drops into the space. That is why sinus lifts are so much more common in the upper jaw than the lower one.

Gum disease accelerates all of it, which is why we always recommend reading our guide to gum health before Turkey teeth before you commit to a plan.

The four procedures, in plain English

ProcedureWhat it doesWhen it is used
Socket preservationGraft material packed into the socket at the moment a tooth is removedCheapest and easiest option, but only possible if you are having the extraction now
Guided bone regeneration (GBR)Granular graft plus a membrane to rebuild width or height of the ridgeModerate defects, often done at the same time as the implant
Sinus lift (closed or open)The sinus membrane is lifted and graft placed underneath to create heightUpper back jaw where there is not enough bone under the sinus
Autogenous block graftA block of your own bone, usually taken from the jaw ramus, screwed into placeSevere loss where granular material alone will not hold shape

A closed (internal) sinus lift is done through the implant channel itself and adds only a few millimetres. It is minor, usually done in the same appointment as the implant, and barely changes your trip. An open (lateral window) sinus lift goes in through the side of the jaw, gains much more height, and needs months of healing before implants can go in. When a clinic says “sinus lift”, ask which one they mean, because the two have completely different consequences for your timeline.

Many clinics also add PRF (platelet rich fibrin), spun from your own blood, to speed healing. It is a genuine adjunct, not a gimmick, but it is not a substitute for graft material.

How the clinic decides: the CBCT scan

A panoramic X-ray is two-dimensional and will not tell anyone whether you have enough bone width. Only a CBCT scan shows the jaw in three dimensions, and it is the scan that produces the graft decision. This matters for one practical reason: most UK patients do not have a CBCT before they travel, so the grafting decision is genuinely made on arrival. That is normal, not a bait-and-switch.

What is not normal is a clinic that refuses to tell you in advance what a graft would cost if the scan calls for one. As we set out in our guide to Turkey dental package deals and hidden costs, the fix is simple: get the graft prices in writing before you pay a deposit, so the number cannot move once you are in the chair.

If you have a recent CBCT from a UK dentist, send it. A good clinic will read it and give you a far more accurate plan before you book flights.

What it costs in Turkey vs the UK

ProcedureAntalya (our 2026 price)Typical UK private
Sinus lift, one quadrant£270£900 to £2,500
Autogenous bone graft (ramus block)£550£1,500 to £3,000
Surgical membrane (Straumann)£250Usually bundled, £300 to £600
Osstem implant with abutment£380£2,000 to £2,800

Full figures are on our treatment price list, and our Turkey vs UK cost comparison shows how the totals stack up once grafting is included. The headline point: grafting adds real money in the UK, where it can push a single implant past £4,000. In Turkey it typically adds a few hundred pounds to a plan that was already several thousand cheaper.

Healing times and what they do to your trip

  • Socket preservation: no extra trip. Healing runs alongside the usual three to four month implant integration.
  • Closed sinus lift: no extra trip. Done with the implant, healing is the standard three to six months.
  • GBR at the same time as the implant: no extra trip, but integration is often pushed to five or six months rather than three.
  • Open sinus lift: usually a staged case. Graft on trip one, implants four to nine months later on trip two, crowns on trip three. Realistically this is a three-visit plan.
  • Block graft: four to six months before implants can be placed, so also a staged, multi-trip case.

This is the part patients underestimate. A staged graft case is not “a few extra days”, it is an extra return flight and an extra week off work. Budget for it honestly. Our week-by-week recovery guide covers what each healing phase actually feels like.

Recovery: what the first fortnight is like

Expect swelling that peaks at 48 to 72 hours, bruising in some cases, and soreness managed with ordinary painkillers. After a sinus lift there are specific rules that matter more than people think: do not blow your nose, sneeze with your mouth open, avoid straws, and skip flying if you can for the first few days. Pressure changes push against a membrane that is still healing.

Smoking is the single worst thing you can do to a graft. Nicotine restricts the blood supply the graft depends on to turn into living bone, and graft failure rates in smokers are substantially higher. If you are going to stop for any window, stop for this one.

Can grafting be avoided?

Sometimes, yes, and a good clinic will tell you when. The main alternatives are:

  • Short or narrow implants placed in the bone you already have.
  • Tilted implants, which is exactly what All-on-4 is designed to do: angle the posterior implants forward to reach denser bone and avoid the sinus entirely.
  • Zygomatic implants, anchored into the cheekbone, for severe upper jaw loss where even grafting is unlikely to be enough. Our zygomatic implants explained guide covers who this suits.

If you are weighing full-arch options, our All-on-4 vs All-on-6 vs 3-on-6 decision tree works through the same bone questions with CBCT examples.

Questions to settle before you fly

  • If the CBCT shows I need a graft, exactly what will it cost, itemised?
  • Closed or open sinus lift, and does that change the number of trips?
  • What graft material do you use, and is it synthetic, bovine or my own bone?
  • Is the graft covered by the same guarantee as the implant?
  • If the graft fails to integrate, who pays to redo it?
  • Can I send my UK CBCT now for a firmer plan?

Frequently asked questions

Does a bone graft hurt?

Less than most people expect. It is done under local anaesthetic, and the discomfort afterwards is comparable to a difficult extraction: sore and swollen for two to three days, then steadily better. Block grafts, which involve a second surgical site, are the most uncomfortable of the four.

How long after a sinus lift can I have implants?

With a closed sinus lift, the implant usually goes in at the same appointment. With an open lateral window lift, expect four to nine months of healing before implants can be placed, depending on how much height was gained.

Can I fly straight after a sinus lift?

Most clinics ask you to wait a few days after an open sinus lift because cabin pressure changes can stress the healing membrane. A closed lift is far less restrictive. Always follow your surgeon’s specific instruction rather than a general rule.

Is a bone graft included in a Turkey implant package?

Usually not, because nobody knows you need one until the scan. It is one of the most common legitimate add-ons to a package price, which is exactly why you should get the graft cost in writing before you pay a deposit.

What is the success rate?

Grafting is well established and success rates are high, commonly quoted above 90 per cent in healthy non-smokers. Smoking, uncontrolled diabetes and active gum disease are the factors that pull that number down the most.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Absolutely life-changing experience – I cannot recommend Amazing Smiles highly enough! From the moment I stepped off my flight in Antalya, I was welcomed by the lovely, smiling Kadir – our dedicated driver who looked after me so carefully across both my trips. He was always on time, warm and kind, making every journey between the hotel and clinic completely stress-free.As someone who is usually very nervous and finds dentists extremely difficult, I was so anxious about this whole process – but Dr Gamze changed everything. She is an exceptional dentist: so gentle, patient and understanding, never rushing me and taking all the time I needed to feel at ease. Her wonderful assistant Humaira was equally amazing – so thoughtful and attentive, I simply cannot thank her enough. Then there is Alina – quite simply the best coordinator anyone could wish for. She looked after me with such care, explained every single step in perfect English, and made sure I understood every detail of my treatment plan. Watching how she looked after other patients too, with the same kindness and professionalism, showed me how special this whole team really is.My journey has spanned three months: my first visit back in February, then returning home to wait for healing, before heading back recently to finish everything. It felt like no time at all thanks to how well supported I was throughout. I am absolutely delighted with the final result – it is everything I hoped for and more.Thank you to every single person at Amazing Smiles for your kindness, patience and brilliant work. If you have any questions about my experience, or would like me to explain anything in more detail, please do ask – I would be only too happy to help anyone thinking of choosing this wonderful clinic.

I cannot thank the team at Amazing Smile Turkey enough for making my partner and me feel so at home during our journey. It started six months ago when we met Onur in Newcastle. He supported us with weekly updates right until we landed in Antalya. Everything from the hotel to the transfers was incredibly easy. The clinic was pristine, and Dr Tuğçe, dr Gamze gave me 100% perfect care from start to finish— we have truly had the best doctor possible. A special thank you to Aleena, our translator, who stood by us at every step, and to our driver, Kadir. You have changed our lives!
