Nearly every Turkish clinic advertises a guarantee, and the words are reassuring: lifetime guarantee on implants, five years on crowns, and so on. The trouble is that a guarantee is only as good as its written terms, and most UK patients never see those terms until something goes wrong. This guide explains what dental warranties in Turkey actually cover, what quietly voids them, who pays for the flights if you need a repair, and how to make a claim from 2,000 miles away.
The two guarantees are not the same thing
There are two separate promises sitting behind the word “guarantee”, and confusing them is the most common misunderstanding we see.
| Manufacturer guarantee | Clinic guarantee | |
|---|---|---|
| Who gives it | The implant company (Straumann, Nobel Biocare, Osstem and so on) | The clinic that treated you |
| What it covers | The titanium fixture itself, against manufacturing defect or fracture | The work: placement, integration, the crown or bridge on top |
| Typical length | Lifetime on the fixture, for the original patient | Varies widely, from 1 year to lifetime depending on the component |
| Covers labour? | No. A free replacement screw does not pay a surgeon | This is the part that matters, and the part you must get in writing |
The manufacturer’s lifetime guarantee is real, and it is a genuine argument for named premium brands over unnamed ones. But it replaces a component, not a treatment. Everything that costs money, the surgery, the lab work, the appointments, sits under the clinic guarantee. When a clinic advertises “lifetime guarantee”, ask which of the two they mean.
This is also why brand verification matters so much. If you cannot prove which implant is in your jaw, you cannot claim against the manufacturer at all. Our guide to verifying implant brand certificates shows exactly what paperwork to insist on before you fly home.
Typical guarantee lengths by component
| Component | Typical guarantee | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Implant fixture | Lifetime (manufacturer) | Titanium does not wear out; the risk is integration, not the metal |
| Zirconia crown or bridge | 5 to 10 years | Strong material, main risk is fracture under heavy bite forces |
| E-Max veneer or crown | 5 to 10 years | Excellent aesthetics, more brittle than zirconia in the back of the mouth |
| Composite bonding | 1 to 3 years | Stains and chips by nature; it is a repairable material, not a permanent one |
| Acrylic temporaries and dentures | Usually none, or 1 year | Designed as an interim solution |
| Bone graft | Often excluded entirely | Ask specifically; this is a common gap |
At Amazing Smile Turkey, every implant on our price list is supplied with a lifetime guarantee on the fixture, from Osstem through to Straumann SLActive and Nobel Biocare. What you should be asking any clinic, including us, is the follow-on question: what happens to the crown on top, and who pays to redo the work.
What voids a dental guarantee
Almost every guarantee in the industry excludes the same things. None of these are unreasonable, but you need to know them before you sign:
- Smoking. The most common exclusion of all. Many clinics void implant cover entirely for smokers, or reduce it. Nicotine measurably lowers integration success.
- Missed check-ups. Most guarantees require an annual dental examination and hygienist visit, with records. No records, no claim.
- Poor oral hygiene leading to peri-implantitis. Gum disease around an implant is the leading cause of late failure, and it is patient-side.
- Bruxism without a night guard. If you grind and were advised to wear a guard, not wearing it usually voids cover on fractured crowns.
- Trauma. An accident, a sporting knock or a fall is not a materials failure.
- Work altered by another dentist. If a UK dentist adjusts or re-cements the crown, most Turkish guarantees end at that point. This is worth planning for, and our UK dentist handover guide explains how to keep both sides happy.
- Uncontrolled medical conditions, particularly poorly managed diabetes.
The question nobody asks: who pays for the flights?
This is the single most important line in any Turkish dental guarantee, and it is almost never on the marketing page. A guarantee that covers “free replacement of the crown” still leaves you paying for flights, a hotel and time off work to collect it.
Clinics handle it in three broad ways. Some cover treatment only, and travel is entirely your cost. Some cover treatment plus hotel, with flights on you. A smaller number will contribute to flights for a genuine clinical failure within a defined window. None of these is dishonest, but they are very different in practice, and you should know which one you have bought before you pay a deposit.
Ask it directly: “If a crown fails in year three and it is covered, what exactly do I pay to get it fixed?” A clinic that answers clearly in writing is telling you a lot about how they will behave later. Our guide to what package deals really include covers the same principle across the rest of your quote.
How to make a claim from the UK
- Get it examined and documented. See a UK dentist, get an X-ray and a short written note describing the problem. Do not let them adjust the work yet.
- Photograph everything, including close-ups of the affected tooth.
- Contact the clinic before any UK repair. This is the step people get wrong. A UK repair first almost always ends the Turkish guarantee.
- Send your original documents: treatment plan, invoice, implant brand certificates and the guarantee itself.
- Get the clinic’s response in writing, including what is covered, what you pay, and the dates offered.
The realistic point of leverage is not legal, it is reputational and procedural: a clinic with a written guarantee, verifiable reviews and an established UK patient base has strong reasons to honour it. Cross-border legal enforcement is slow and expensive, which is precisely why you vet the clinic in advance rather than relying on the paperwork afterwards. Our 9-point reviews trust checklist is built for exactly that job.
The paperwork to fly home with
- Itemised treatment plan and paid invoice
- Implant brand certificates with lot and serial numbers, and the sticker card
- Crown and veneer material specification, naming the brand
- The written guarantee, stating length per component, exclusions and the travel position
- Before and after X-rays, plus your CBCT file
- A named contact at the clinic and their direct email
Scan all of it to cloud storage the day you get home. Paper certificates go missing over the ten years a guarantee is supposed to last.
Frequently asked questions
Is a lifetime guarantee on dental implants genuine?
Yes, on the fixture. Major manufacturers guarantee the titanium implant for life to the original patient. What it does not include is the surgery, the crown on top or the cost of travelling back, which is why the clinic guarantee is the one to read carefully.
Does smoking void my dental guarantee in Turkey?
Very often, yes, at least for implants. Smoking substantially raises the risk of failed integration and peri-implantitis, so many clinics exclude or reduce cover for smokers. Ask for the exact wording rather than assuming.
Can my UK dentist repair Turkish dental work without voiding the guarantee?
Emergency pain relief is normally fine. Structural work such as re-cementing or replacing a crown usually ends the guarantee, so contact the treating clinic first and get their written agreement before anything is altered.
Who pays for flights if I need work redone?
It depends entirely on the clinic’s written policy, and this varies more than anything else in the industry. Some cover treatment and hotel, some treatment only. Settle it in writing before you pay a deposit.
What if the clinic closes down?
The clinic guarantee ends with the clinic; the manufacturer guarantee on the fixture does not, provided you kept the brand certificates. That is one more reason to insist on the paperwork and to favour established clinics with a long trading history.
